The Top Ten Best Werewolf Movies

1. An American Werewolf in London – This movie is full of director John Landis quirks, but nothing will beat the signature Rick Baker transformation effects.

2. The Wolf Man – The original featuring Lon Chaney Jr. is the best explanation of all the lore that goes with the traditional werewolf myths. The effects and story still hold up after sixty years!

3. Teen Wolf – How can anyone not like Fox as the werewolf teenager in this classic? (Apparently, quite a few people, since it’s on the Top Worst list too. -Ed.)

4. The Howling – Here largely because everyone else puts it here. It does a good job as a horror movie, but was largely sullied by a string of not so great sequels.

5. The Monster Squad – This underappreciated cult gem features the werewolf as one of the Universal monsters in the grouping fought by prepared teens.

6. Dog Soldiers – This European take on the military versus monster movie with werewolves in the mix was a first film that really returned to the practical special effects for the best monsters in a while.

7. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban – One character is a werewolf to great effect and unlike many in the genre is actually a good werewolf.

8. Ginger Snaps- This metaphoric tale is only good for soapy teen angst that being a werewolf is supposed to represent in the film.

9. Underworld – “Lycans” versus vampires. Lots of gun violence and convoluted plot with CGI transformations. Hard not to like for popcorn movie.

10. Silver Bullet – One of the only Stephen King adaptations worth a lick. Gary Busey is actual coherent and enjoyable in this one!
